I just returned from the Philippines, where 51% of Coursera learners are women—one of the only country where women outnumber men on our platform. An inspiring milestone! But here’s the challenge: 📉 Globally, women are being left behind in AI. A Harvard Business School study found that women are: Less likely to learn AI Less likely to use AI tools Less likely to build AI technologies If we don’t act now, GenAI will widen the gender gap instead of closing it. That’s why we partnered with AI experts like Jules White, Merve Hickok, and Barbara Oakley to create a new playbook: “Closing the Gender Gap in GenAI Skills.” .     GenAI skills are becoming essential for business success, but are you tapping into the full potential of your learners and workforce? A recent meta-analysis published by Harvard Business School shows that women are significantly less likely to learn about AI, use AI tools, and build AI technologies. But it doesn't have to stay this way! I’m excited to share our new "Closing the Gender Gap in GenAI Skills" playbook, developed with research on Coursera alongside AI experts like Jules White, Merve Hickok, and Barbara Oakley, offering business leaders data-driven strategies to build more inclusive GenAI training programs. A diverse team leads to more innovative solutions and a stronger bottom line, so let's all help make that dream a reality ✨ Our new playbook outlines key barriers as well as concrete actions we can take to counteract these, including: --> Limited time and unclear guidelines hinder skill adoption: Many women cite "lack of time" as their top reason for discontinuing STEM courses, reflecting the frequent challenge of balancing caregiving and work responsibilities. On Coursera, flexible learning paths and AI-powered tutoring are helping to bridge these gaps with Coursera Coach users completing 11.6% more items per hour and women also being significantly more likely to use Coach. --> Perceived lack of relevance: Only 36% of women believe GenAI can advance their careers, compared to 45% of men. This perception gap discourages upskilling. Women are more likely to engage when GenAI’s relevance is contextualized through practical applications in healthcare, education, and tasks from our daily lives. Real-world case studies and interdisciplinary GenAI courses have proven effective in increasing participation and completion rates. --> Confidence gaps reduce persistence: Self-efficacy plays a crucial role in learning outcomes. Women often hesitate to engage in GenAI courses due to a lack of confidence, even when they possess the necessary skills. On Coursera, women are six times more likely to enroll in beginner-level GenAI courses than intermediate ones, indicating a preference for structured, accessible entry points.     As we step into March, I find myself reflecting on the impactful Black History Month celebration we had at Coursera last month! 🎉 We kicked off the month with Shannon DuPree, DHSc, CHES, CHWC,and CWP, who guided us through effective strategies for stress relief and burnout prevention. To close out the month, we welcomed back Kemyell Rieves for our first session of "Cuisines and Conversations." Kemyell shared her inspiring career journey as a Black woman in tech and her love for cooking, highlighted by her favorite family dish—Shrimp and Grits.     Meet Colin, a Tokyo-based learner pursuing the online MSc Cyber Security degree from the University of London! After nearly 25 years of working in IT, a ransomware attack at his company motivated him to sharpen his cybersecurity skills. Working through nearly all the available free courses, Colin decided to double down with a master’s degree.  📈Keeping up with IT trends: Despite Colin’s vast IT background, he recognized the need to continue his education. The MSc offered a gateway to keep up with the latest technology trends. 🎓 Colin’s advice: With an average score of 91% in his coursework so far, Colin advises prospective learners to be determined, study hard, and prepare for what he describes as an “intense workload”.  ⏰ Time management: With 10-15 hours of coursework per week, Colin encourages employed learners like himself to balance time as best as possible. “You’ve got to be determined and commit—but it will be so worthwhile,” he says. “I've had a very good and fortunate career in IT,”  Colin says. “But [the industry] moves on—and in my previous role as CIO, I was already struggling to keep up with the trends and the latest knowledge … I'm hoping that [the MSc] extends my longevity for another 10 or 15 years.”  Apply for UoL’s MSc in Cyber Security before the March 17 deadline: https://bit.ly/4ifpncC
