I'm trying to replicate the logo engraving technique used in this product visualization done by Derek Elliott in Blender. The challenge is achieving:

  1. Sharp-edged recessed geometry - The logo appears deeply inset with clean, defined edges and subtle beveling
  2. Proper cavity shading - The recessed area shows realistic shadow and reflection behavior
  3. Clean topology - Without creating subdivisions that impact the underlying hard-surface shape

Derek's work: enter image description here

What I've tried:

option 1 : boolean modifier :

option 2 : adding a displacement modifier :

I have seen the option of using the bump node, but the bump node only gives the illusion of the logo being engraved, I want it actually to be engraved exactly like in the CharaChorder USB stick.

You don't need to create a grid, just remove the extrusion, convert your text to mesh and make sure that the topology is correct: no overlapping faces or vertices, no flipped faces, then extrude:

Give a Boolean modifier to your cube with the letters as boolean object:

Apply the Boolean:

If you plan to shade smooth, add a Smooth by Angle modifier:
