Senior product and AI strategy for software companies.

Ruboss provides founder-led advisory and fractional product leadership for SaaS, AI, publishing, education, creator-economy, and developer-tool companies. Engagements are led by Peter Armstrong, founder of Leanpub.

You don’t need another consultant. You need product judgment.

Most software companies aren’t short on frameworks, decks, or opinions. What they’re missing is someone who has actually built and run a software business and can help make a hard call with confidence.

Ruboss is a small, founder-led advisory firm. Companies contract with Ruboss to get Peter Armstrong’s senior product, AI, and strategy judgment — applied directly to the decision in front of them. No layers, no junior teams, no generic playbooks.

Services - Where Ruboss helps.

Engagements are shaped around your situation. These are the areas where experienced, founder-level product judgment makes the biggest difference.

  • Fractional Chief Product Officer. Senior product leadership on a part-time basis: owning strategy, roadmap, and product decisions alongside your team without a full-time hire.
  • Product strategy review. An outside read on your product direction, priorities, and roadmap, with clear recommendations on where to focus and what to stop doing.
  • AI product strategy. Where AI genuinely changes your product, roadmap, and business model — and where it doesn’t. Grounded in building and running real AI systems in production, not slideware.
  • SaaS pricing and packaging. Pricing, tiers, and packaging that match how customers actually buy and that hold up as you move upmarket.
  • Founder and CEO advisory. A direct, experienced sounding board for the product, strategy, and organizational decisions that land on your desk.
  • Board and investor advisory. Product and technology judgment for boards and investors weighing the strength of a software business.
  • Technical product due diligence. Independent assessment of a product, codebase, and team for acquirers and investors, in language both executives and engineers trust.
  • Creator, publishing, and developer-tool strategy. Deep operating experience in creator-economy, publishing, education, and developer-tool products, from a founder who has built one.

AI product leadership - AI shipped in production — not theorized in a deck.

Most AI advice comes from people who have never run an AI feature in front of real customers. Peter has built and operated a growing suite of AI systems inside Leanpub. That hands-on experience is what informs his guidance on your AI product decisions.

  • AI course creation. Generating and structuring course material, turning existing content into teachable, sequenced lessons.
  • AI Translation at scale. Translating entire programming and data-science books into dozens of languages while preserving code, formatting, and meaning.
  • AI ghostwriting and copy editing. Drafting and refining book content with the author in the loop, from first draft to polished prose.
  • AI Transcription. Turning audio and video into clean, structured, usable text for authors and readers.
  • Reliable AI in production. Knowing what it takes to make AI features dependable and repeatable with real customers — the difference between a convincing demo and a system you can actually run a business on.

Engagement models - Ways to work with Ruboss.

Whether you need ongoing leadership or a sharp answer to a single question, there is a model that fits.

  • Fractional CPO. Ongoing, part-time product leadership embedded with your team and accountable for outcomes.
  • Product strategy sprint. A focused, time-boxed engagement that produces a clear strategy and roadmap recommendation.
  • AI strategy review. A structured look at where AI creates real leverage in your product and where it is a distraction.
  • Board or advisor retainer. A standing relationship for boards and leadership teams who want senior product judgment on call.
  • Investor and PE due diligence. Independent technical and product diligence for a specific deal or portfolio company.
  • CEO advisory. A confidential, ongoing advisory relationship focused on your hardest decisions.

About Peter Armstrong - A founder and operator, not a career consultant.

Peter Armstrong is the founder of Leanpub and has worked in software since 1999, including eight years at Silicon Valley startups.

Peter Armstrong
  • Founder and operator. After eight years building products at Silicon Valley startups from 2000 to 2008, Peter founded Ruboss in 2008 and launched Leanpub in 2010, bootstrapping it to profitability with no outside investment.
  • Product, SaaS, and AI experience. Peter coined the term Lean Publishing and created Markua, the Markdown dialect used on Leanpub. His work spans SaaS, the creator economy, publishing, education, and developer tools — and a growing suite of production AI systems built into Leanpub.
  • Technical and commercial. With a BSc in Computer Science and Psychology from the University of Victoria and years writing software, Peter is technical enough to work directly with engineers and commercial enough to work with CEOs, boards, and investors.
